1. You should look over the billing statement anyway, just in case.

Correct! While there may be nothing wrong with the statement, it’s good practice to read over it just in case. Ensure the services listed match the services ordered and received and that you haven’t been billed twice. If you find an issue, contact your provider or reach out to the SMP at 888-515-6565.

2. It’s ok to provide that information to someone over the phone if they call you.

Correct! You should never provide your personal information over the phone if someone calls and asks for it. People may call and imitate the IRS, Medicare or Social Security looking for your personal information. If any of these organizations need to reach you, they’ll send a letter. If you think the call may be legitimate, hang up, and call the organization with a phone number you know and already have. They’ll be able to confirm if they were calling or not.

3. You should open the emails and click the links inside to see the deals.

Correct! Generally, deals that seem too good to be true are. These emails are likely phishing scams designed to get you to share personal information with people who are up to no good. If something seems legitimate, but you aren’t 100% sure, contact your provider, the SMP or the organization you believe is emailing you.

4. You should contact the SMP about home health not providing therapy or skilled nursing services.

5. Medicare conducts door-to-door sales.

Correct! Medicare does not conduct door-to-door sales. So, if someone arrives at your doorstep trying to get you to talk about your Medicare coverage, it is not Medicare. Additionally, there is a risk that they may be trying to get your personal information or try to size up your house and security for a theft. It’s best not to let them in the house and tell them “no thanks.”
